Today, we’re going to make Percy Jackson Blue Chocolate Chip Cookies! I love finding books with recipes in them. Not that this book actually has a real recipe in it, but these blue cookies are mentioned in the novel. So, I just had to make them! Go here if you’d like to read our review of The Lightning Thief. (change to internal link later)

In The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, Percy Jackson talks about how his mom used to make blue chocolate chip cookies. And not only cookies, but drinks and candy and whatever else she could come up with. The reason for this was because Percy’s stepdad, Gabe Ugliano, said there was no such thing as blue food. This caused an argument, so to prove him wrong, she started making blue food.

To celebrate the blue food, I’m showing you how to make Percy Jackson’s Blue Chocolate Chip Cookies. Turquoise is my absolute favorite color, so I was pleased with how gorgeous these cookies are!

Quote from the book:

“I guess I should explain the blue food.” Percy explains the argument between his mom and stepdad, and continues:

“But ever since, my mom went out of her way to eat blue. She baked blue birthday cakes. She mixed blueberry smoothies. She bought blue-corn tortilla chips and brought home blue candy from the shop.”

For this recipe, I used the back of a bag of chocolate chips because I think that’s the best chocolate chip cookie recipe, don’t you think? I halved the recipe because it makes a ton of cookies!

Ingredients You’ll Need:

-flour

-baking soda

-salt

-butter

-sugar

-brown sugar

-blue food dye- gel or food coloring. I used Wilton gel.

-eggs

-vanilla

-chocolate chips-I prefer mini chips, which is what I used.

First of all, combine flour, baking soda, and salt in a small bowl.

To another bowl, cream the butter with the sugars and vanilla.

Wet ingredients (sugars, butter) in glass bowl, ready to be creamed

Then add the egg and blend.

Next, scrape down the bowl and add enough blue food dye until you get a vibrant blue. I used blue gel from Wilton, but you could also use liquid food coloring.

Now, slowly add the flour mixture to the creamed sugar. Then add the chocolate chips. Notice I added the chocolate chips a little too soon in the video. Oops.

Optionally, you can line your pan with parchment paper like I did. It helps the cookies to not stick. Plus, there’s no cleanup.

After that, roll into balls. I like placing chocolate chips on top of each ball of dough right before it goes into the oven because the chips are really visible after they cookies are baked. It just looks a lot nicer in the end. But that’s totally up to you.

Lastly, bake the cookies at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Let cool. Eat and enjoy!
