Synopsis:
It’s almost a year since Gaby Winters was in the car crash that killed her twin brother, Jude. Her body has healed in the sunshine of Pandanus Beach, but her grief is raw and constant. It doesn’t help that every night in her dreams she kills demons and other hell-spawn.

And then Rafa comes to town. Not only does he look exactly like the guy who’s been appearing in Gaby’s dreams—he claims a history with her brother that makes no sense. Gaby is forced to accept that what she thought she knew about herself and her life is only a shadow of the truth—and that the truth is more likely to be found in the shadows of her nightmares.

Who is Rafa? Who are the Rephaim? And most importantly, who can she trust?

Fast-paced and gripping, Shadows, the first book in the Rephaim series.

My Thoughts

First off, I’ve found that I enjoy reading books about angels. I’d read an angel series (Penryn and the End of Days—I highly recommend it!) before this one and I was craving another. This is the series I’d found and I can’t say I’m disappointed. There are four books in this series, and I read each of them back-to-back.

As previously stated, this series is about angels. In this story, however, Gaby has amnesia and later learns she’s actually half angel. She gets wrapped up in a feud between two groups of angels and must choose who to believe and which side to join. The whole series takes place within about a week or two total, so it’s a wild ride. Consequently, there’s hardly ever a dull moment. As the story goes, she slowly learns more about her past and who she really is.

Overall, the characters were enjoyable and there were many twists throughout the series. I really wasn’t expecting there to be so many layers to uncover. There was a lot of cool action, too, like the fight scenes where the half-angels kicked demon butt. There are even explosions and bazookas, which was pretty awesome!

In addition to all that, most of the series takes place in Australia (Paula Weston is Australian), so it was cool to get to experience the country and wildlife. It was a fun experience. Plus, since the angels can teleport, we also get to experience lots of different places throughout the world. Pretty cool.

All in all, I enjoyed it. Weston only has a couple of other books out at the moment, but I hope she keeps writing. These were very good, and I look forward to reading anything else she might write in the future.

My Rating out of 5
