Synopsis:
My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:
1. I’m in a coma.
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore.
3. Sometimes I lie.

Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can’t move. Can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it’s the truth?

My Thoughts

I don’t read a whole lot of adult fiction. YA is my preferred genre. But a couple years ago, I participated in my public library’s summer reading program. Reading books would get us entered into a weekly drawing for prizes. I happened to get my name drawn, and in addition to winning a totally cool pair of socks with books all over them (YES! Who doesn’t like book socks?!), I also had the opportunity to choose a book to keep. They had several adult titles to choose from, and they were all new, so I hadn’t heard of any of them. I chose Sometimes I Lie because it seemed twisted and fraught with mystery.

It didn’t disappoint. Amber is in a coma. She can’t remember what happened to land her in the hospital, but she is suspicious of everyone around her. As the story goes, we learn about her childhood, as well as the days leading up to the accident. By the end, it all comes together. Everything makes sense. Things we thought we knew weren’t really what we thought they were and there is more to everything than we first think.

This story is so full of twists. . .and is so very twisted. When I finished, I was kind of glad to put the book down and end all the craziness. But that’s not to say it wasn’t good. Because it was. It was just exhausting finding out the truth to everything, because every new truth seemed to uncover more treachery and deceit. If you like your stories with two sugars and a big dollop of lies, then this book might be your cup of tea.
