Are you ready to learn how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich kabob? It sounds rather odd. I know.
But in the book Ways to Make Sunshine, the main character makes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and puts them on skewers with sliced strawberries. It may seem a little strange to skewer sandwiches and strawberries together, but if you’re looking for a fun activity to do with your kids or students, you might try it! It’s a fun way to serve and eat a traditional lunch.
See our review on Ways to Make Sunshine as well as our other recipes and crafts that come from the story, including Blackberry-Lime Extravaganza Smoothies, Lemon Brownies (delicious!), and “Sun” Suncatchers you can hang on your windows.
Now, on to the story! Ways to Make sunshine is about an 11-year-old African American girl, named Ryan Hart, and her family. It’s about her struggles in life and how she continues to have a positive outlook, despite her troubles. It’s a cute book worth reading, especially if you’re a kid who also likes to cook, which is Ryan’s favorite thing to do.
Here’s a quote from the book:
“I am in the kitchen helping mom prepare a snack. We’re making peanut butter and jelly skewers. After explaining the steps in making them, her father asks, ‘All that work for a PB&J sandwich?’
But Rays comment didn’t deter her.
Ingredients You’ll Need
-bread
-strawberries
-peanut butter
-jelly- any flavor
-Butter Knife and a sharper knife to cut out strawberry hulls
-Wooden skewers – (they’re sharp, so parental supervision is suggested)
First, make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich like you normally would and cut it into four squares.
Next, slice the leafy top off the strawberries and dig out the hulls. Then, cut the strawberries in half, lengthwise. Now comes the fun part! Take a wooden skewer and pierce a sandwich square onto it, followed by a strawberry half, then another sandwich square. Repeat until you have filled the skewer with all parts of the sandwich.
Doesn’t it look pretty?
